I’m curious as to which way, politically, the majority of the Urdu-speaking population of Bangladesh might lean? Also, I’d like to see how the respective parties behave towards them?
Rumi bhai’s interesting assumption. I thought as likely that they might vote for BNP or Jamat, but it seems from what you’re saying that, in places like Ishurdi, they are for AL. Would that be, I wonder, AL as it is today or the AL of Sheikh Mujib’s era?
I wonder what would happen if various minorities in Bangladesh, e.g., the Biharis, the Chakmas, etc, were to have something of a united front; what kind of an impact would it have on the metteurs-en-scène of Bangladeshi politics?
AL of Sheikh Mujib’s era? Have you flipped? After what happened in Khulna in 72? After the passing of laws which appropriated their properties?
No reason to espouse narrow politics whatsoever. The buzz word is “mainstreaming.” The buzz process is to become a full-fledged Bangladeshi. There should not be segregation and ghettoising. Nevertheless as a minority they should come together in various fora and pursue their particular interests vigorously given the…shall we say, asymetrical history they have had.
