Another sort of politics will soon begin with the urdu speaking people. As the Hindus are presumed as AL vote bank, these urdu speaking people will be deemed as BNP vote bank. Moreover as they are concentrated in a few spots around the country, these new votes may significantly change the elction outcome of certain constituencies. Mohammadpur-Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Chittagong Pahartoli are examples. So now one side will try to use them for political gain and the other side will do their best to scare them out of the citizenshiop process.
Most urdu-speakers are AL in Syedpur, Ishurdi, Chittagong and even Khulna. Any self-contained community can be subject to political co-option or coercion. The urdu-speakers are no different except that their political memory is that a narrow project can be totally and utterly disastrous. Have they lost that memory already? I hope you are not suggesting, Rumi, that they will fall prey to this enticement. That is an empirical matter and we will just have to see. There is no given here. They are not programmed to accept a narrow political message. And as you rightly say what we have to be vigilant about is the approach of the wider community.
