Peculiar graphic design, buxom wenches, explicit action, wanton violence - yes this caretaker government has had an impact on all of these! Dhallywood has been facing some serious restructuring with so-called “obscene” films finding it more and more difficult to surface. But as always there is a peculiar history…..the state’s involvement in both the production of such films in the first place and then their censorship is often overlooked! I will be discussing this more and more this coming year. So here is a little taster from my modest poster collection ( standing at about 500 now….!). I have uploaded a miserly eight for your delectatation and edification. No particular reason behind the choice - they are the first that came to hand. And they are by no means the best..nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Follow the link HERE.

[…] Miezaka mamoaka lahatsary mendrika azon’ny mpianakavy Bangladeshi jerena miaraka ny orinasa Bangladeshi mpamokatra izay antsoina amin’ny anaram-bositra hoe Dhallywood. Saingy noho ny hatsaran’ny sary mivoaka avy any Hollywood sy Bollywood, izay tafiditra tsara anaty tsena Bangladeshi sy ny hamoran’ny kapila mangirana VCD/DVD piraty dia tra-pahasahiranana i Dhallywood nandritra ny folo taona farany. Ho fanajana ny lalà nan’ny sivana izay mifehy ny fiaraha-monina betsaka Miozolmana dia nitady lalankafa hanintonana mpijery amin’ny alalan’ny fampilendalendana sy ny sehatra somary mahery vaika amin’ny alalan’ny lokon’afisy ny mpanatontosa lahatsary ao Dhallywood. Indro i Shafiur ao amin’ny imperfect world 2008( izao tontolo izao tsy lavorary) mizara amintsika ny afisy 8 amin’ny voangony efa mahatratra any amin’ny 500 any ho any hananantsika hevitra amin’izay atolotry Dhallywood amin’izao fotoana izao. The one I like is called “Hothyakari”. I have a thing for any depiction of girlpower. If only my sister-in-laws looked like that…
Yes Md [pbuy] - this is one of Shapan Choudhury’s. As far as I know, he made two other films. All three were banned for obscenity. I hope to catch up with him later this year if all goes well….
Well, if all goes well, I might be in Bangladesh after 6th of April. My White mrs wants our little one see her dadhu. If you are there then, I’d be happy to treat you to Kasturi (the only restaurant where my father (r.i.p) was prepared to eat-out in Dhaka).
Talking about banning and censoring, I’d be interested to know what you think is behind those who want to stifle others artistic activities.
Yes your dad was sensibly conservative re eating out. However I do believe things have changed. I eat out virtually every day and I have never had any upsets whatsoever!
How old is your kid? My son first went when he was 4. He loves the place, and associates it with toys, toys and more toys. Now he is double that age and enjoys a lot of other things including the food. To have the enormously positive image that he has of Bangladesh, a so-called muslim third world country, for a boy growing up in the UK is ….well, different and I am relieved and thankful. My white Mrs loves the place too. Before each half-term she looks at me hopefully and wonders about my plans….
Re April - sure, email me and see if i am there or phone me. My details are always here http://shafiur.rahman.com/
Now re banning and censoring….well, I will expect you to shell out for our little publication?!
Well, my dad knew three families in Dhaka. One was his surrogate daughter who married and stayed behind while the rest of her family had to leave for present day Pakistan; and, there was his two long time friends, one was a fellow bearded chap (I can only picture him as an old man) and another was a clean-shaven chap who owned a hotel somewhere in Motijheel. I have tremendous respect for them all. I don’t know much about the surrogate sister but I’m glad neither my father nor his Dhaka-based friends are there to see the state of Bangladesh now.
If my memory serves me right, I believe they have been consistently good. Yes, things have changed, and no doubt some plush and lush eateries have sprung, but they’ll be incomparable to my memories of going to Kasturi with my father. For me, they were my golden Bengal.
So, now you know why I recommend Kasturi.
My daughter will be almost 4 by then, and it will be her first visit, but she’s somewhat used to flying from our visits to southern France. Yes, it will be a culture shock, it always is for me. Couple of years ago I found it traumatic. Children are less phased by it. It’s all excitement for them. I’ve been showing clips from YouTube to my daughter to give her an idea of what to expect. Yes, I’ll be relieved if my daughter judges things by her self, as a rule, we avoid saying either negative, or positive, things about Bangladesh. It’s those crazy and eccentric relatives I worry about.
Ah, yes, and those jabs! Do you bother with malaria pills and jabs?
Well, it will be great for my daughter to see that she’s not the only one. That in itself will be a positive thing. Well, I’ll contact you before we head off.
Ah, well now, that would depend on what ’shell out’ entails.
I’ve just looked at Anwar Hossain’s favourite quotation of a Japanese poet, would be possible to find out the name of the poet. I’d appreciate it. Thanks.
Malaria for Dhaka? No. What for?
Jabs. Yes of course.
Surrogate daughter: you needn’t answer this but what the hell is a surrogate daughter?
I believe the Bengalis refer to it as “dhormi” or “dhormyo”, so, a surrogate father, mother, daughter, or son, is someone who is in some respects fostered but not adopted like we do here, in the UK. My father had dhormi sons and daughters left right and centre, the man was loco. :-))
Not necessarily for Dhaka but excursions to other places. The online Hospital for Tropical Diseases does say that Dhaka is less of a worry.
