With all this noise around Mohammed Yunus, this year’s Nobel Peace gong winner, I decided I should find out how rich this banker to the poor is. I have no idea about his regular income. The only information I have is that he has bagged 10 million Swedish Kronors (about 723k GBP). And his share his half given that the award has been made jointly to the good professor and his Grameen outfit. Let’s say that he sticks to his celebrated wisdom of not handing out money to the poor - meaning he doesn’t do donations - that means he will keep approx 360k. That income, according to information based on figures supplied by the World Bank Development Research Group, would make Prof Yunus the 107,565 richest person in the world! Not bad going when you think there are six billion people knocking about. Well done again Mo!

The more I read and hear I about this person from people who had been around him long enough - my respect and admiration for him and his philosophy grow higher.
This guy who could afford every luxury in the world chose not to. His residence does not have air conditioning units.
He has already made plans to spend part of the money on the nutritious food for poor (with Danone Company) and part to build an eye hospital.
The people who give, keep on giving, and those who take (er steal) keep on doing just that.

Interesting - the Danone thing got underway in July.

Where did you hear that he is going to shovel some of the dough onto that? I am afraid I have only read the bbc but your sources I suspect are wider. Anyway, this is what the bbc reported about what he intends to do with the loot:

I am loathed to say it but as far as the Grameen microcredit programme isconcerned there is no use in viewing this kind of “development” with rose tinted spectacles. It is problematic at a number of levels, and its reproducibility, despite the figures you hear, is also limited. This is not me mouthing off…though i happened to work on microcredit issues in South Africa …this is research which has been published.
As far as his philosophy is concerned, that is also a contentious issue. Reading the current coverage one might be forgiven for thinking that microcredit is like a stroll through elysian fields for the poor…it isn’t. I think some of the bangla blogs are talking about this.
And from an organisational point of view Asif sent around an article which was perturbing. You probably saw it. If not here it is:

For a Bangladeshi, none have attained the international prominence to the scale of Professor Younus. It feels great and was definitely a very joyous moment for the nation when the son of our soil received a noble prize. This gave us the confidence as a nation from the the usual crap world outlook of us that we are bunch of poor people with no skills and run by an equally incompetent corrupt government.
I agree and have read that Grameen Bank’s financing rates are way high and we may read a few disturbing article about it but guys give the man credit for building a instituition which is currently delivering financial loans to 80 million people in 70 countries.
There is nothing as a free lunch and he may have very well have a captive market of 7 million captive female borrowers in Bangladesh and his grand plan would be to utillise their skills to produce products or services, enhance their disposable income and than put inustries or services to cater to their needs. There is nothing wrong with that as long as he is within the law.
The reach of NGO’s like Brac, Grameen, ASA, Proshika have troubled many political parties and we have seen the political ambitions of Professor Younus, Kazi Faruque clipped.
As long as NGO’s are delivering the services to the people and are strongly monitored, they can play a big part in the developement of Bangladesh.
He is a selfish guy ………………….And cruel to poor…………..And a dangerous guy for Bangladesh……………Bangladesh will never be developed by his strategy……………….

It sad to see people blaming and throwing mud at a person who is living a simple life and helping others. Rather than blaming this person, I think it would be better for Mr. SR (who is even afraid to give his name) to prove himself better than Dr. Yunus.
