nice article shafiur. i've always found the potential for great architecture in bangladesh to be staggeringly rich. Given the forms, spaces and imagery in bangladeshi traditional arts along with its easy cohabitation with modernist aesthetics. but before I sound like a complete tosser, I want to say thanks for the link to this website. I'm familiar with some of those featured - but wasn't expectin a such a good website on bangladeshi architects.

one of my medium term plans is to take a 5 year hiatus from london, return to dhaka with a plan to rebuild the old family house on my own terms rather than give it to some developers who will effectively build an ugly 10 storey block on it and sell my property back to me for 3 flats and some cash, with lift and generator of course. no thanks.

Yes the formulaic crap they have been allowed to get away with cannot be blamed on the builders and architects alone. They have to service boring, unimaginative, ghooshed-up, keeping-up-with-the-joneses gulshan-walla clients after all.

That is a real spinner of a question. I think the answer lies at a somewhat more abstracted level. The institutional context needs a description, and that I am not equipped to do. There are issues about eco-sustainability, about linkages to the community, about planning and accountability to residents etc, and whether younger professionals are best equipped to do these things I do not know. Can they stand upto the forces of power like bigger companies? I am assuming here that at some level there is conflict/negotation/bargaining between professional institutions, their clients and the structures making up the legal milieu in which they work.

Good post.

Compared to many other places in the world, I find Bangladesh architecture are quite rich. I do not know how many of these are genuine idea and what portion are cut and paste job.

In Bangladesh, I guess, relatively inexperienced architects are getting the opportunity to do major works. Professionals just 5 to six years out of school, are building largest highrise Mall/shopping center of the country. My little cousine, just graduated from BUET now has designed the highest residential tower in chittagong.

In USA, I feel, these sort of jobs will go to major multinational firms with decades of experience with a grey hair architect in his 60s or 70s leading a pool of senior achitects.

I don't, however, see much of a difference in the end result, the work.

Any thought?
